How Do You Find Your Clients?

So you are starting out in business or maybe just interested in how we find our clients? Let’s take a quick step back for some background.

As a husband and wife team with experience in Graphic Design and Personal Assistance, we launched our business in March 2025. We had no client list or contacts to lean on, so we started completely from scratch.

We’re more than happy to share what worked for us. There’s no guarantee it will work for everyone, but it might spark a few ideas.

Here’s what we did:

  • Contact everyone you know – start with family and close friends.

  • Use social media – LinkedIn is brilliant for this. Post engaging, varied content that lets your personality show. It’s free advertising!

  • Create flyers or business cards – hand them to neighbours or people you meet on the go.

  • Attend local networking groups – meet people, make friends in business, and widen your circle.

  • Put adverts on local noticeboards – supermarkets and community spaces are great places to start.

  • Join online networking groups – they’re easy to access and full of opportunity.

  • Get involved in social media groups – the right communities can open doors.

  • Reach out directly to businesses – send polite, personalised emails introducing what you do and that you’re available for work.

When did we get our first break?

Our first big contract came, surprisingly from the third networking meeting we attended. It was a simple meet and greet, a quick LinkedIn exchange, and a few days later came a message offering us work.

Our first big contract came, surprisingly from the third networking meeting we attended.

Another client came from a networking chat that led to a video call and eventually a signed contract.

One job arrived after someone saw us respond to a LinkedIn post. A completely different person noticed our comment, checked out our portfolio, and offered us a contract.

Even an old colleague reached out after seeing our posts on LinkedIn, sending a quick voice note to ask for a quote, which turned into another project.

The common thread? Visibility.

People need to see you before they can decide to work with you, whether that’s today or months down the line. Visibility doesn’t always lead to immediate clients, but it builds awareness. It keeps you in people’s minds as someone available and ready to take on work.

If I could give one key piece of advice, it’s this: dedicate a bit of time every day to being visible.

Let us know how you get on, we'd love to hear from you!
